Product Description
This Self-Charging Edifice model eliminates the need for battery changes through its unique Solar Powered system. Robust enough to power functions, such as its 1/100th Chronograph, 29-City World Time and Daily Alarm, the EQS500DB-1A1 is not only intelligent, it’s tough also. The solid stainless steel case with mineral glass is water resistant up to 100 meters.
From Casio, a towering edifice in the watch world comes the Casio Men's Edifice Stainless Steel Multi-Function Chronograph Watch. It kicks off with a 45.8mm stainless steel case with a black-toned stainless steel stationary bezel. The crown and pushers grace both sides of the stainless steel case. These elements cradle a black dial that is a flurry of function protected by a mineral crystal. The dial features silver-toned luminous hour markers and hands powered by precise quartz movement. The dial also features chronograph sub-dials with 1/100-second, day, 60-second and 24-hour displays. A three-link stainless steel bracelet straps this watch to the wrist, while a fold-over push-button safety clasp makes sure it stays there. This watch also features solar power, a full auto calendar and water resistance up to 330 feet (100 meters).
Note:If the watch is in any mode other then timekeeping the second hand will not spin (unless chronograph is actually running)
The way to find out what mode you are in please check the sub-dial located at the 3:00 position if it is not pointing to the day of the week then the watch is not in timekeeping mode thus the second hand will not spin.
Casio
With the launch of its first watch in November 1974, Casio entered the wristwatch market at a time when the watch industry had just discovered digital technology. As a company with cutting-edge electronic technology developed for pocket calculators, Casio entered this field confident that it could develop timepieces that would lead the market.
Today, Casio is focusing its efforts on solar-powered radio-controlled watches: the built-in solar battery eliminates the nuisance of replacing batteries, atomic timekeeping means the users never have to reset the time. Recently, Casio launched a series of Bluetooth watches that sync to the users cell phone to automatically update the time. Casio is always moving time forward.

While in my opinion the watch is a little large (compared to Speedmaster) it is not obtrusive.
When you take it out of the box, don't do anything with it. Leave it under a bright light for at least 2 hours so that the battery is charged. According to the technical specs, a fully charged battery can "live in the dark" for 5 months.
Next, don't read the little booklet!
Instead, go to the Casio website and find the "manual" called Operation Guide 5123 (or search for EQS500DB-1A1 and click the "manual" link. It is a four page PDF that you can open on your computer and enlarge appropriately. The diagrams in the manual are very small and difficult to read. I am including the link for the guide here (but most review sites would strip URL for the fear of being spammed) that is why I included the way to get it on the Casio site.

OK, so why am I making a big deal out of the user guide? Well, this is one watch that you cannot wing it or figure out on the fly. I have been wearing watches to include some complicated pilot's watch for over 40 years and have never found a more convoluted user interface. So do one thing at a time while reading the guide, you simply cannot operate this watch or set it up without it. Mastering it takes even longer but mastering one function at a time will get you up to speed in no time at all.
When you get to setting the year, month, and date. Stop and look at the watch. Although initially my date shows a "1", once I set my home city, it appears the watch has been programmed for the proper year, month, and date so you may not have to go through the settings and was I glad I didn't have to do it.
Having cautioned you on all of the above, you will just love this watch!
I would have preferred the bezel to be movable (since all it does is mark seconds, so being able to be turned when you need to measure something quick) is more beneficial than a stationary bezel (after all, I can see the second had and don't need a bezel for that). Casio would have served us better if the bezel was a Tachymeter where we can measure speed, etc. Another useful addition would be a back light since the phosphorous dial marking only glows about an hour after exposure to light.
The accuracy of the watch is excellent (no more than 10-15 seconds a month drift). I set the time by advancing to the next minute with the second hand at 12 o'clock position while watching an atomic clock on the web/computer. And hit the time set when the minute change.
The dials are multifunction, one point to the day and double as indicator for setting daylight savings. But it is a pleasure to have an analog watch with day and date. While the month and year can be set, it appears to be used only for the watch to know the number of days in a month and I have not found a way to actually "read" the year and month's values.
The health of the battery is shown by the second hand. A second by second movement indicates a good battery. A two seconds at a time shows the battery needs charging. Eventually the second hand will stop (but internal time keeping continues). With normal wear during the day I have not found an instance that the battery shows a low level. When I sleep in the dark, the second hand will stop to conserve power and gladly come to live with the correct time as soon as exposed to light.
Nuf said, it is a gorgeous watch that you will enjoy and don't have to worry about opening and replacing the batteries every two years or so.
The cons are few -
The watch is a little complicated to operate and understand at first. But soon, it'll be easy! It's a bit heavy and might take some days getting used to.
The belt is very sensitive to use. Despite light use over a month, it shows an unfair degree of scratches; but nevertheless, looks wonderful.
The wide hands sometimes cover up the smaller dials making it hard to read the world-time.
You have to wait for the hands to adjust to the 0 position when using the stopwatch function (but I just love to see those little hands go around) so if you really need a stopwatch NOW you won't like it. You need to be in the stopwatch mode, all set and ready beforehand.
I liked the 24 hour format but it is quite hard to read on a dial that small. If you need spectacles for reading it is a big effort. You might instead prefer to do the math yourself.
PS: I'll soon be making a video review along with a video operation manual (I felt the user guide that comes with it leaves a few gaps and is hard to understand in some places)
Now it does have a steep learning curve. It took me a few hours to understand everything and set the watch, however don't let that deter you it is a great watch for the money. I searched around A LOT before finding this watch, and compared to my friend's eco drive, I'd rather have this watch.
