Product Description
Casio
With the launch of its first watch in November 1974, Casio entered the wristwatch market at a time when the watch industry had just discovered digital technology. As a company with cutting-edge electronic technology developed for pocket calculators, Casio entered this field confident that it could develop timepieces that would lead the market.
Today, Casio is focusing its efforts on solar-powered radio-controlled watches: the built-in solar battery eliminates the nuisance of replacing batteries, atomic timekeeping means the users never have to reset the time. Recently, Casio launched a series of Bluetooth watches that sync to the users cell phone to automatically update the time. Casio is always moving time forward.
This solar atomic watch is designed with large case and stainless steel bezel & buttons to create a look that is, performance driven, yet remains sophisticated. With 100M water resistance and convenient functions like world time, stopwatch and alarm, they are perfect for both business and casual attire. Stainless Steel band analog and digital watch.

I lent my watch to my dad today, and he was so impressed he asked me to find him one. With the price down to $85 I'm glad I now have an excuse to buy another one. That's what led me here and I thought I'd just add a few words to my review. I still love this watch and hope they keep making them or something very similar for the day it finally fails. I wear it all day, every day, rain, shine, working in the shop or hiking a 14er. If you're looking at this watch and don't yet own one, push the button and order the thing.
Update, 10 Dec 2015:
Now it has been 16 months and I still really like this watch! No issues, keeps perfect time. And with the current price of $90, I don't think you can beat it for value, assuming of course that you like this style of timepiece. If you do, buy it!
Update, 1 May 2015:
It has been almost 9 months now and the watch is running great and keeping perfect time. I wear it during almost all waking hours, and it's very comfortable. I've grown accustomed to it's slightly larger face than watches I've worn previously... in fact, I like it better now that I'm used to it, as it seems very balanced.
I notice the price of the watch is up about 35% from when I bought it last year. I'm not sure whats up with that, but I do believe this is my favorite of the watches I've owned and I'd spend the $160 they want now if I needed one.
Original review from 7 August 2014:
This is my second Casio Wave Ceptor type watch. The first lasted about 5 years including one battery change, but it recently gave up the ghost and found its way into the trash. I really liked the fact that it never needed to be tweaked to keep the exact time, so when it stopped working I started looking again at what watches are out there that sync time with the Ft Collins, CO time broadcast. I've always been a fan of self-setting time pieces: I have four variations of clocks in the house that set themselves to this time source as well.
After a couple of hours of research, the WVA-M640D-1ACR worked its way to the top of my list and I ordered it. I am partial to analog time display and stainless segmented bands -- pretty much the look of this watch -- so this one fit the bill nicely. I've only had it a couple of weeks so I don't know how well it'll hold up, but I can offer a few comments about it, and a little comparison to my previous Wave Ceptor.
First, it has a larger dial than I anticipated. Now that I look more closely at the photo of it, I can see that it's a little larger around than my previous watch, but it's not overly large. It's also thinner, so even though it's larger around, it stays nicely in place and fits well. In addition, it's lighter. This also helps to keep it from flopping around on my wrist, so overall, I like the size and configuration. It could be just a tad smaller in diameter for me, but that may be because I'm used to my previous watch.
Part of what makes it lighter is obviously the construction. My previous watch was all metal... this one has a stainless covered plastic frame. Time will tell how this holds up, but it seems to be sturdy enough. The only thing I don't care for about this is that there is a small amount of grey plastic that shows between the front stainless cover and the stainless band. This makes it look a little "cheap" I think, but it's not a predominant feature and the grey tends to blend fairly well with the metal.
Compensating for that little bit of plastic, I think, is the face of the watch which I find very attractive. The face color in the photo looks black, but in fact it's a bronze / metallic brown color, which looks really nice. Also under the crystal is a black ring around the dial with small numbers and 60 minute/second markers, and finally around the perimeter of the face on the watch housing are the five minute/second increment numbers and markers that you see in the photo.
An improvement over the previous watch is the digital display at the bottom of the face that now provides information large enough to actually see without my Walmart 1.75 magnifiers on. You can set this display to show various info; I like having the day of the week (e.g., TH) and the day of the month (e.g., 7).
The watch has a bunch of modes for alarms, stop watch, countdown, etc; but those are features that are of minimal interest to me since I pretty much just want to know what time it is. It was easy to set up... just had to tell it my time zone and what I wanted to do about daylight savings time. It immediately adjusted itself to the correct time. That's another improvement over the previous version: it used to be that when I flew somewhere that was an earlier time zone and informed my watch, the analog hands would go forward even if it meant going 11 hours forward to get to a time display of an hour earlier. This one moves the hands either forward or back, whatever is the fastest way to get to the right time. So going back an hour was quick and painless.
One more nice thing: this watch has a solar charging feature that my previous model did not. So the chore of opening the watch, albeit infrequently, to change out a battery and hope you don't break anything while inside the case is history... this thing should keep on recharging and running until it finally dies.
Overall, I am very happy with the watch and, assuming this is the style for you, I highly recommend it. Getting 5 years out of a $100 watch that is otherwise a constant source of perfect time works for me, so hopefully this one lasts at least as long.
- Radio controlled with support for six (6) towers - 29 time zones
- Solar powered
- Perpetual calendar
- Mineral crystal
- 100M water resistance
- Multiple alarms and timing functions (that I will never use)
For those unfamiliar with radio controlled watches, they have a receiver that becomes active during the night that calibrates the watch to the second using a timing signal broadcast from radio towers located in the northern hemisphere around the globe. All the user needs to do is regularly expose the watch to a light source and leave it in a location at night where the watch will pickup the calibration signal from one of the six towers in the northern hemisphere.
Inevitably, this Casio invites comparison with the Citizen RC watches. The quick answer is the Citizens are better but will cost a minimum of 3 to 4 times as much (or more) depending upon the model. Still, the Casio holds its own and is an excellent alternative for those on a budget.
The specifications state that the case diameter is 43mm, a little on the large side but wears smaller. The bezel measures 39mm so gives the appearance of a 40mm watch.
The bracelet is a mixed bag. It is integrated with the watch head and do not believe it can be replaced. The links are hollow using an ingenious design that makes sizing simple and fast using a special plastic sizing tool (included). Unfortunately, there are only two micro adjustment holes on the clasp making it “hit or miss” to get a perfect size. Good news is the clasp is attached with spring bars so can be easily replaced with a 3rd party 18mm deployant clasp for more sizing options. There are plenty of sizing links and should be able to adjust from 6” to 8.5” wrists.
The lume on the hands and hour markers is better than expected. Though not “Seiko” quality, it will last thru the night. It does contain an LED at the bottom of the dial that can illuminate the watch if needed.
I typically avoid watches with an LCD display but feel that Casio’s implementation is useful and tasteful. The LCD normally displays the date but can be used for timer, stop watch functions and adjusting the time zone (Note: With RC “World Time” watches, you select the time zone and the watch will automatically move the hands to the correct time for the zone).
All things considered, this Casio punches way above its price point. Due to its newness, cannot comment on long-term reliability but if the watch delivers at least 6-7 years of service, then I consider it to be a bargain. Just let that settle in, 6-7 years of accurate date and time to the split second with no intervention or adjustment. I rather like the clean simple styling. It may not be a “fine” watch but looks nice enough that you will not be embarrassed to wear except for the most formal occasions. With this watch, I am starting to understand the cult following that Casio enjoys. Highly recommended.
