After reading some more reviews I decided to strap it on - just for pure research of course. As a dedicated fan of G Shocks and Seikos I have to say I'm impressed not only by the fit and finish but by the accuracy. I set this watch to my atomic G Shock two days ago when it arrived and it has been exactly on time to the second. Like others have noted, the chapter ring isn't exactly lined up properly but it's only by the slightest of margins and barely noticeable to anyone except the most observant. That said, I'm retired and my days of caring about precise accuracy measurement down to the millimeter are far behind me.
I have a Seiko SKX007 that has been my faithful daily wearer for the better part of 20 (wow!) years and have had a 6309 diver previously which is what caught my eye on this one as it appears to be an homage and that was, hands down, one of the most comfortable watches that I'd ever owned. Well, it looks like I'm giving this gift to myself as it's a great watch - accurate, comfortable, easy to read and has the great Seiko dependability (I hope). Also, I looked at the caseback and this has the added bonus of having a Japanese movement. Combine that with the hackable movement now available and this is a winner. Well done Seiko.
UPDATE: Two + weeks into owning this watch and I've worn it everyday. I've showered, swam and had this soaked in sweat at the gym. Zero issues with water resistance. However, the most impressive thing to note is the accuracy. It has lost 11 seconds over a two and a half week period. I would expect this sort of automatic accuracy out of a few thousand dollar Swiss timepiece, but for a couple of hundred dollar Seiko? Again, I'm impressed.
I switched over the factory silicone strap to an older straight vent Z22 and find it more comfortable and fitting to the style of the watch as well, plus it's not a lint magnet like the silicone. The fact that the watch head has drilled lugs made the swap a breeze as well. The dial of the watch (much like the old 6309s) is uncluttered and easy to read making this a great watch for, shall I say, "more mature" eyes. The added bonus of having superior luminosity at night is a plus as well. A quick "charge" under my reading light before bedtime will keep it easily visible in complete darkness until morning time.
All in all, I'm very pleased with the watch, the price and the accuracy. In fact I'm admiring it on my wrist as I type this!
After some thinking, I decided against it because if it's not a Rolex, then it might come off cheesy in my opinion, even though there are some great ones out there. I wanted something unique. Upon looking at diver watches I came across the Seiko 6105 model some time ago. I saw the famous pictures of Martin Sheen wearing one in Apocalypse Now, which I think is the reason so many people like this model. What attracted me the most about the watch was the shape, which I guess people are calling the "Turtle". It looked rugged and had that military aesthetic. I was so happy that they brought out this model! It's based on the 6309 model from the 70s and 80s. I wasn't around during those times but I really like vintage looking things. Designs were definitely more tasteful. I read stories about this watch being worn by US soldiers in Vietnam. Political opinions aside and disdain for US constant involvement with wars and invasions, I really liked it's "toughness" factor. It definitely has that military and celebrity appeal if you look at it's history. It''s just all around a cool looking watch! There's really not much else I can say about this that hasn't already been said. For this price, you may not find anything better. Of course, there's thousands of diver watches. But this one stands out I think, particularly because of its shape. I admit, it may have gotten some inspiration from Rolex, being one of the original makers of diving watches. But its distinctive enough. I really liked the SKX models, but held out and finally got this one. I like it much more than the SKX. Then again, the SKX is a bit more refined and modern and is more versatile. The SRP just stands out as a sports watch. I won't be wearing it with suits. But it's perfect for casual outfits and outings. I got the 777 because I got lucky with the price. But also I think it's more versatile than the other colors in my opinion. The "Pepsi" bezel is another looker! But honestly, the 777 is the type of watch you can wear with any color dress shirt for a casual look. Anyways, you get a great package here...great brand with history, military/sporty aesthetic, hacking movement, day and date complication. It's pretty accurate so far only gaining a few seconds. I can't say much about the movement because I'm not an expert on that. The rubber band is very comfortable and great looking with its metal keeper and V shaped buckle. I might get a NATO strap or 2, cause I think it'll look great on them. Overall, great adventure watch for divers or watch enthusiast alike!
On to the negatives, since this is why people read these things anyway.
-First, the band is very comfortable, but pics up dust and lint easily. The silicone type material is like a magnet for white particles. It wipes off without any problems, but can get linty pretty quickly. Not a big deal.
-Second, my watch fell prey to the sword logo not lining up perfectly with the 12 o'clock mark. Other reviews on YouTube and the internet point this out as a common "problem". While a little annoying, it's just an aesthetic issue and I got past it quickly.
-Third - that's it. There are no more! This watch is that good!
This is a quality piece for a very good price. I expect to have it for many years and be able to eventually pass it down to my son.
