Hamilton Ventura Review – The Iconic Elvis Watch

Hamilton Ventura Review

In this post I’m going to write about a very iconic watch in rock and roll – the Hamilton Ventura aka the Elvis watch.

It’s not only iconic due to its shield-shaped or V-shaped case, but the fact that the King of Rock and Roll even worn one cemented its status as a one-of-a-kind watch.

The Iconic Ventura Watch Worned By Elvis

Elvis Presly worn the Ventura in many appearances, but most notably in his 1961 movie “Blue Hawaai”.

The King was known to be an avid watch collector, but I believe the Hamilton Ventura is one timepiece that fits him perfectly.

Blue Hawaii Hamilton Ventura Elvis

Just look at the watch – it’s totally unusualy with the shield-shaped case. Elvis, with his over the top concert outfit and fashion sense, was clearly the rightful owner at the watch.

It just seemed that Hamilton designed the watch specifically for him!

Not only that, the Ventura that Elvis owned was also one of the world’s first electric watch. Apart from the extraordinary fashion sense, the watch is also a historical landmark from horological point of view.

The 1957 Hamilton Ventura – An Electric Watch

Around the 50s, the world tried to invent a new type of watch to replace the not-so-accurate mechanical watch. One of the first invention was the electric watch, first emerged as a prototype in 1952.

But it was only until 1957 that Hamilton produced the first electric watch produced for the masses, the Hamilton Electric 500.

Hamilton then decided to put the same movement into the Ventura, released in the same year.

Hamilton Ventura 1957

The original Hamilton Ventura, released in 1957, is one of the first electric watches in the world

The early electric watch still uses the balance wheel set-up as seen in traditional mechanical watch (read my article here to learn more about how mechanical watch works), but instead of a mainspring, it used battery and electromagnets as power source.

While it had the benefit of longer use since the watch don’t need to be winded to recharge its power reserve (like the traditional mechanical watch), the usage of balance wheel as timekeeping device meant the electric watch was not really more accurate than its mechanical sibling.

It was not until 10 years later the tuning fork movement (by Bulova) and the superb quartz movement (by Seiko) that mankind finally made a significant breakthrough in horological accuracy.

But without a doubt, the Ventura and Hamilton’s other electric watch did made a huge impact on the watch world. It was the first watch to be powered by electric / battery cell and was the foundation of other electric watches were built upon.

And the Ventura, with the shield-shaped case remain one of the most iconic and stylish watch ever made.

Enough with the introduction. Let’s get into the Hamilton Ventura review shall we.

Black Dial Design – Closest Similarity To The Original 1957 Ventura

Over the years, Hamilton had released various Ventura watches such as the Elvis80 (released in 2015 to commemorate Elvis’ 80th birthday) and XXL (with bigger size) versions, but this particular model (model No. H24411732) is the one with the closest resemblance to the 1957 version that Elvis worn albeit in silver stainless steel vs. the gold case in the original.

This watch has the pitch black dial underneath the clean silver stainless steel hands and markers providing a handsome contrast dial.

Hamilton Ventura Quartz

Is it a bit monotonous ? Yes I agree but I there’s something about the cleanliness of the dial and the overall design of the watch that makes it very unique.

While the other iterations of the current Ventura (such as the Elvis80 watches) have open dial design, this particular model looks sharper. Sometimes, less is more and that’s definitely true for both this and the original Venturas.

After all, when you got a very unique case, the dial is best to be left as simple as possible to not make the watch too “busy” with lots of elements.

Hamilton Ventura Dial

Also, it’s actually better in terms of practicality as the V-case doesn’t provide much dial real estate. A simpler design is preferred to ensure best legibility of the time.

Besides the small dots as index markers, there’s also the Hamilton signature and the triangular pattern at the middle. Unmistakably, the pattern is a nod to the coil symbol – to commemorate the original 1957 Ventura with the moving coil electric movement.

Very simple and yet very handsome. The Hamilton Ventura’s dial is not as eye-popping as other watches but it’s the perfect companion to the V-shaped case.

Highly Polished Stainless Steel Shield-Shaped Case

The most attractive element of the Ventura is of course the unique shield-shaped or V-shaped case. It’s almost identical to the original 1957 version with the exception of a slight change in the crown.

The case has a v-shape with the 9 o’clock positioned at the bottom of the V. The 9 o’clock to the 3 o’clock is the shorter side of the watch at 31 mm.

The longer side of the watch (or the top of the shield/V) is at the 3 o’clock side and purposefully made to be perpendicular to the wrist. At the ends are the “wings” that extends out from the watch’s main body to the strap.

Hamilton Ventura Side

While the shield-shaped case is the one that stands out the most, the wings are also my favorite bit on the watch. Besides having a practical purpose to hold the strap pins, it amplifies the Ventura’s unique look.

A truly remarkable design in my opinion. It’s truly befitting Elvis with his outlandish fashion choices.

Without a doubt, expect a lot of eyes glancing on this timepiece because it’s definitely an eye-catcher =)

By the way, Hamilton also released a smaller version of the watch intended for the ladies. It is about 24 mm at the shorter side with model no. H24211732. Do check it out if you want to get a complement watch for your other half.

Mineral Crystal On Top Of The Ventura…. No Sapphire?

One of the dissappointment with the watch is the absence of sapphire crystal on top of it. The Hamilton Ventura on has mineral crystal on it, which is not really scratch resistant.

What’s perplexing is the high price of the watch (at around $800 to $900 MSRP, but is much lower when bought online i.e Amazon, Ebay etc.) warrants a sapphire crystal on it.

Hamilton Ventura side 2

Sapphire crystal is the de-facto crystal used on any expensive watches, and at the price point of the Ventura, it’s unthinkable to not have it on the watch.

A cost cutting measures from Hamilton? That’s seems to be the case since the higher range of the Ventura model features sapphire on top of it.

ETA Caliber F05.111 Quartz Movement

Powering the Hamilton Ventura is the quartz movement from ETA, the F05.111 caliber. Nothing much can be said about the quartz movement except that it keeps perfect time and can last for 2 to 3 years before needing a battery change.

For automatic movement lovers, all hope is not lost as Hamilton do produce the Ventura with it. Check out their website to look at the Ventura Auto, Elvis80 Auto and XXL Auto model lines. To my knowledge, these higher priced Venturas do have sapphire crystal on top of it =P

Hamilton Ventura Pros and Cons

  • Very unique, yet handsome and fashionable shield-shaped case
  • The closest resemblence to the Ventura watch worn by Elvis in the 60s
  • Accurate Swiss quartz movement
  • 50 m water resistance

  • Not the best bang for buck watch in the market
  • No sapphire crystal on it

Watch this unboxing video of the Ventura to take a closer look at the watch

Who Is This Hamilton Ventura Watch For?

If you’re looking for something funky, very fashionable and out of ordinary, the Hamilton Ventura is one of the best watches you can get.

It’s distinctly designed shield-shaped case will easily turn all eyes over the watch. Not to mention it does look handsome even with this unorthodox case shape for a watch.

In addition, the Ventura’s assosiation with Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, that owned this watch do make it a very attractive watch to be owned by the King’s fans.

The edgy design, fits perfectly with Elvis, and that’s something a fan would love to be a part of.

Where To Buy Hamilton Ventura?

If you love the Hamilton Ventura, consider getting the watch from online retailers such as Amazon. It has the best price with steep discounts compared to the high MSRP of the watch at around $800-$900.

On Amazon though, the watch usually retails around the $500-$600 region which is much more make sense to me. Click the link below to check out its latest price.

Who Should Not Get It?

As beautiful and handsome as it is, the Hamilton Ventura is a bit too expensive for a watch. At its price, we are getting a quartz watch with mineral crystal which is a bit too high in my opinion, even by Swiss watch standard.

At the price point of $500-$600 (from online retailers), we should be getting an automatic movement WITH sapphire crystal. Not to mention that this is a “Hamilton” and not the other more expensive/exclusive Swiss brands.

While it does win in terms of aesthetic, this Hamilton Ventura is not really the best watch in terms of value proposition.

If you’re looking to get the best value for your hard-earned money, consider the watches in these 2 lists of the best automatic watches of under $1000 to $200 and under $200.

Final Thoughts

The Hamilton Ventura is without a doubt an eye-cacthing watch. With it’s distinctive shield-shaped case, it looks very edgy and handsome – perfect for those looking for a fashionable timepiece.

In addition, it’s original version had been worn by Elvis, the King of Rock and Roll previously. That, in itself, is enough to put this watch on a different level than the rest.

While the watch is certainly good looking, I find the features to be quite on the lower side, considering the price range that Hamilton is asking for it.

Even at the gray online retailers, the watch is still too expensive with the quartz engine and mineral crystal.

Otherwise, this is definitely a fashionable timepiece that any Elvis or non-Elvis fans would love to wear =)

I hope you’ve enjoyed this Hamilton Ventura review. What do you think about the watch? Let me know in the comments below if you think the watch is something you’d like to own or not.

I’d love to hear what you think about it =)

Hamilton Khaki King Scuba Review – Hamilton’s Take On Diver’s Watch

Hamilton Khaki King Scuba Review

In this post, I’m going to write about Hamilton Khaki King Scuba review (H64515133), a diver’s watch from the American-Swiss brand. And I’d dare say that this watch is among the cheapest Swiss Made diver’s watch currently in the market right now.

Swiss automatics are expensive, more so diver’s watches. So to have a Swiss automatic diver’s watch that can be had for around $500 is a very big deal.

The watch’s official name is Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba Auto (taken from its Hamilton’s website but somehow the Khaki King Scuba name sticks. Well, this watch do look a lot like the Khaki King watch, another famous watch from the brand with military style design.

The DNA of a diver’s watch is very strong in it, with the unmistakable Rolex Submariner-like styling all throughout it especially with the bezel.

A Watch With Diver’s Watch Look

The Khaki King Scuba is unmistakably a diver’s watch from the look itself, but I found some aspects of it to not be as good as I’d expected from a true diver’s watch. You know, the watches you used for actual dives and not just one that only has the style.

The bezel, less than satisfying lume, small hands and lack of double lock clasp are the showing that this is not a “real” diver’s watch in terms of functionality. Not just that, with the price encroaching into the $500 mark, it’s less value for money as compared to most Japanese diver’s watch.

Read here for my list of 10 Best Automatic Dive Watches

But stictly in terms of the design and aesthetics, this Hamilton Khaki King Scuba is definitely a good looking diver’s watch. That full day calendar is very unique and useful to have too.

Enough with the introduction. Let’s check out the Hamilton Khaki King Scuba review.

Hamilton Khaki King Scuba (H64515133) Specification

Best Place To Buy: Amazon

Black Dial With Classic Diver’s Watch Style

The dial of the Khaki King Scuba is unmistakably diver’s watch style, though with some elements that make it look not like the other diver’s watches out there.

For instance, though it has the normal black dial, the full day window at the top of the watch is unique and you won’t find it with any other watches. It’s definitely much better and easier to recognize when the watch shows “TUESDAY” instead of just “TUE”.

Hamilton Khaki King Scuba on hand

In addition, the date window is located at the bottom. This is a strange thing to do since most watches put their date window at the right side but then considering the fact that the day window is at the top, this layout will even things out and make it symmetry.

The full numeral markers are also quite unusual for a diver’s watch as circular or rectangle markers are preferred since those shapes can hold more lumes on them. But I believe it will be a favorite for that are used to the traditional watch look.

The number 3 and 9 are enlarged as compared to the other numbers and this make them pop. The dial is more attractive this way as it’s less boring than what normal watches have.

On top of the bezel is an unidirectional rotating bezel which is the biggest thing that tells apart this watch from its brother, the Khaki King. On this, I’d prefer Hamilton to create their own bezel design instead of using the bezel used by the more famous Rolex Submariner. I mean, if they can design a unique dial, I’m sure they can design their own unique bezel.

Not So Great Lume

But the draw back of the metallic numeral markers is there is not much lume on the dial. Instead of putting the lume on the markers like traditional diver’s watch would, Hamilton was forced to apply lume pips above each marker.

Hamilton Khaki King Scuba lume

That’s the lume on the Khaki King Scuba

Well, the result is less than satisfying. The hands glow brightly but the weak lume from the pips will cause problem to tell time in the dark. Not to mention there is no special lume marking for the 12 o’clock. This will surely cause a little bit of confusion as to the orientation of the watch in low light setting.

Seiko Sumo Lume shot

And this is the lume on the Seiko Sumo. So which one you’d prefer =)

Small Size Case

The diameter of the case is a “small” 41 mm, with 12 mm thickness. It’s sleek and looks great, befitting of the Hamilton brand. The stainless steel watch uses a matching stainless steel oyster bracelet which I believe is the best choice in terms of usability.

Stainless steel bracelet will last way longer than any fabric, leather or rubber strap. Being stainless steel, it wont be corroded or damaged from repeated use.

Hamilton Khaki King Scuba side

Not just that, it’s also versatile – can be worn as a dress watch and also casual use. The only drawback is the additional weight to your wrist. But you’ll get used to it, sooner or later lol!

Covering the watch at the top is a sapphire crystal which is the best option when it comes to watch crystal. It’s way more scratch proof than other crystals (mineral or acrylic) and will make the watch look pristine even after years of usage.

Last but not least, the watch has a 100 m water resistance, thanks to its case design and screw down crown. It’s definitely at the lower end of water resistance rating but most people don’t need that 300 m water resistance right?

Not to mention having only the minimum 100 m rating will enable Hamilton to reduce the weight and thickness of the watch, thus making it a more wearable watch to the normal people.

The Trusted ETA 2834-2 movement

Inside the Hamilton Khaki King Scuba is the robust ETA 2834-2 automatic self-winding movement. The movement is one of the most popular movement from the Swiss movement manufacturer and features 25 jewels inside it.

Not to mention as the ETA company is part of the Swatch Group, I’m sure that the company won’t go anywhere in the future. This gives the assurance that the parts and knowledge about the movement will be there when the watch needs a servicing later on.

Hamilton Khaki King Scuba back

The Hamilton Khaki King Scuba also has an exhibition caseback so that its owners can peek at the ETA 2834-2 movement

The movement runs at 8 beats per second which gives a fluid sweeping second hand motion that’s characteristic of all automatic watches. It’s also slightly more fluid than the 6 beats per second movements that the Japanese (Seiko and Orient especially) makers loves to use.

It’s power reserve can be called modest at best. With just 38 hours, it will barely pass 2 days of no use without dying. But fortunately the movement can be manual wind so that we can easily replenish the power reserve by rotating the crown without having to wear the watch continuously.

Who Is This Watch For?

Anyone looking for an affordable Swiss automatic diver’s watch should seriously consider this Hamilton Khaki King Scuba. It looks great in its own right, without having to copy the popular Submariner look like other watches.

The watch construction is great and with the 41 mm diameter, it will surely fit on most guy’s wrist. The usage of the trusted ETA 2834-2 movement makes it a good automatic watch.

Overall, a really good looking watch suited for casual and dress use.

Hamilton Khaki King Scuba on hand 2

Who Should Not Get It?

I don’t recommend this watch to those looking a watch for serious diving. It’s a good looking watch for sure, but the features are less diver’s watch and more to dressy.

The lume is unsatisfactory for a diver’s watch standard. It’s very hard to tell the time with such small lume pips. Not to mention there is no lume on the 12 o’clock position of the bezel rendering the watch bezel limiting its use to places with good light.

In addition, the clasp does not has a double lock which is very important to secure the watch. No one want’s to accidentally release the clasp and losing the watch in the sea right?

With all of that, I believe the Hamilton Khaki King Scuba is more towards a good looking diver’s watch look than practical usage. For a list of the best automatic diver’s watches that can be used for diving, head over to my article HERE.

Hamilton Khaki King Scuba Pros and Cons

  • One of the cheapest Swiss Automatic diver’s watches around
  • Unique dial design unlike other diver’s watch
  • Sapphire crystal for maximum scratch protection
  • Easy to read dial with numeral markers

  • Lume is unsatisfactory for a diver’s watch
  • No double lock clasp

Final Thoughts

Without any doubt, the Hamilton Khaki King Scuba is a good looking watch with dive styling. And it does this by using Hamilton’s own design without copying the more traditional look of other diver’s watches.

If you guys like the Hamilton Khaki King, then you’ll surely love how this watch looks.

It might not have the best specification and features for a diver’s watch, but considering it only costs about $500 is already a great value for money for a Swiss Made watch.

Hamilton Khaki Pilot Automatic Review – The Hamilton Interstellar Watch

In today’s post, I’m going to write about Hamilton Khaki Pilot Automatic review, which if you notice is also called the Hamilton Interstellar watch.

It’s actually the same watch model worn by Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) in the 2014 sci-fi blockbuster “Interstellar”. Without wasting any more time, let’s get on to the Hamilton Khaki Pilot review.

Hamilton Interstellar Watch Review

Screen grab of a scene from Interstellar. Pictured above is Matthew McConaughey wearing the Hamilton Khaki Pilot

Hamilton Interstellar Watch

The full name of this Hamilton Interstellar watch is quite long – It’s actually Khaki Aviation Pilot Day Date H64615135 (taken from Hamilton’s website) but it’s better known just as Hamilton Khaki Pilot or Khaki Aviation.

It’s worn by Matthew McConaughey in the sci-fi movie “Interstellar“. Hamilton sure knows how to market their watches by partnering with movie studios.

But one thing I’ve gotta admit is this watch really looks great on Matthew McConaughey in the film. Hamilton also produced another watch specially for the movie but sadly it’s not mass produced for their customers.

Hamilton Khaki Pilot Automatic Review Black Dial

Large Aviation Dial For Easy Reading Of Time

The watch has classic aviation watch styling all over it. The first thing I noticed was the big markers which definitely help to make the watch easy to read.

It’s in silver, catches light beautifully and contrasts nicely with the black dial. One unique thing is the main markers are the 60-minutes markings – something that I’ve seen in many aviation watches.

It’s a bit different than normal 12-hour markers and will take some time to get used to but on the other hand, it’s a nice change from a normal watch.

If you feel that you will not be able to tell time easily because of the minute markings, don’t worry as Hamilton also put a 12-hour markers.

It’s positioned at the inner center of the dial, outside of the inner circle. This is nice touch and nicely pulled off by the brand. It gives this normal watch a little bit complexity to its dial.

At the top is a day window with full wordings which is something that I really like. It’s quite boring having to read short-forms of day display in normal watches so having a full word on this watch is certainly a breath of fresh air.

At the bottom is the date window. Some people complaints that the date is too small to be seen, but I beg to differ.

It’s in white color and highly contrasts with the surrounding black dial – this will make it very legible to read.

To have date and day function on a watch is something that I’ve always recommend, especially for a watch intended to be used as a daily beater. It gives the wearer a lot of functionality.

For a start, you don’t have to take out your smartphone just to know the time anymore =)

Hamilton Khaki Pilot Review

The hands are beautifully designed too. The minute and hour hands have skeleton and sword shapes, something that’s quite rare.

I also like how Hamilton plays with both of these: the hour hand has the empty skeleton at the tip while the minute hand got the empty space at the bottom part.

And the empty spaces ends/starts from the same inner circle line too! That’s an incredibly nice design by the team.

Another thing I have to mention is the tip of the seconds hand stops precisely on the edge of the outer edge minute markings – another great detail.

The amount of thoughts put into this watch design really astounds me. Not to mention the symmetry that the dial holds – it’s totally amazing to look at.

I’m always a big fan of details on watches as it really fascinates me. Having a watch with many details are incredible and you will find yourselves always looking at that small perfectly executed detail.

Hamilton Khaki Aviation Sides Curves

Solidly Crafted Stainless Steel Case

The case of the Hamilton Khaki Pilot automatic watch is proportioned nicely at 42 mm diameter which is the perfect size for a casual watch like this.

It can fit most men’s wrist nicely. At 11 mm thick, it’s also quite thin too which means it is not too heavy on wrist. The lug width is 20 mm which comes with a brushed stainless steel bracelet from the box.

Some distinctive characteristics of the watch case are the curves and layers of the stainless steel case.

Instead of having a normal straight sides, the curve has subtle curves at its sides. The case is brushed, but has a polished strip between the side and top of the lug.

This kind of detail reminds me of Seiko with their curving and inter-layer brush and polish finish (see this post about the Seiko SARB033 to see it).

It’s really nice to see Hamilton use this finish on this watch as it makes the case more refined and more exciting to look at instead of the boring straight sides.

The bezel on the other hand is highly polished and sloped from the body to the sapphire watch crystal at the top.

Sapphire crystal is the best material for watch crystal due to its resistant to scratching. You can use a watch with sapphire crystal and it will still look pristine after many years (read my introduction to watch crystal types here for more info).

Nowadays, sapphire is the common crystal used in most Swiss watches, though the same cannot be said for watch brands from other countries (yes, I’m talking about you Seiko).

On the back is an open caseback to view the ETA 2834-2 movement (more on this movement later).

Despite this, the watch has a water resistance rating of 100 m. All in all, this is a watch with perfectly executed stainless steel case.

It has unique curves at the sides and its lugs which are really nice to look at. The usage of sapphire crystal will give the owner an assurance that the watch crystal is well protected from scratches.

Hamilton Khaki Pilot Automatic Review Open Caseback

Swiss ETA Caliber 2834-2 Automatic Movement

Inside the Khaki Pilot is an ETA 2834-2 automatic movement. Being an automatic, it means the watch don’t use battery.

Instead it uses a self-winding mechanism to recharge the watch’s mainspring. This mainspring is the one responsible to “move” the watch by slowly winding out.

After 38 hours, the mainspring will exhaust its tension and need to be rewind again by rotating the crown. But since this is an “automatic” watch, the owner can rewind it just by simply wearing the watch.

The self winding mechanism using rotor (the half circle metal seen from the open caseback) will rotate when our hands move – and wind the mainspring.

Simply using the watch everyday will keep it running, and there is no need to change the battery at all (unlike those normal and boring quartz watches =p).

The movement features 25 Jewels, with 28800 vibrations per hour or 8 beats per second. This mid-high beats gives the watch a beautiful sweeping second hand which is prettier than 6 beats movement normally found in Japanese watches.

The accuracy is quite good. Even though it has a published accuracy of +-15 seconds per day, the actual accuracy as testified by its owners give it around +-6 seconds per day, well within COSC Chronometer range.

A video showing the Hamilton Khaki Pilot up close

Overall, this is a watch that is good looking with unique look on it. There is no doubt why Christopher Nolan and team chose this watch to be used by Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar.

The well thought dial design, with lots of details really astound me. The case also is carved with beautiful curves and comes with brush and polish finishing.

The usage of a tried and tested ETA 2834-2 movement with sapphire watch crystal helps to give assurance to its owner that the watch can withstand everything thrown at it.

It can even survive intergalactic journey for god’s sake =)

Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic (H32515555) Automatic Watch Review

Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic Automatic Watch Review

In this review, I’m going to look in depth at a very beautiful dress watch, the Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic. There are several models of this line of watch from Hamilton so I’ve selected the H32515555 which is one of the most good looking of them all. It looks very smart, sleek and sharp as a dress watch with guilloche dial design at the center. Now, let’s get on to the Hamilton Jazzmaster review shall we.

Hamilton Jazzmaster Review

Slim And Sharp Stainless Steel Case

One look at the Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic and you know that this is a very smart and sharp dress watch. And it is built that way too. The diameter is just 40 mm, quite small by today’s standard, and measures 11 mm thick. This make the watch small and look very dressy.

It’s obviously will fit with most people’s wrist, except if you are a very big guy of course. I like the slim profile as it will slip effortlessly underneath shirt sleeves and won’t get stuck like other bulky watches.

The lug width is a typical 20 mm, and sports a dark brown leather strap. One unusual thing that I notice is the leather strap is using pin buckle, instead of butterfly clasp usually found in Swiss made watches. I would prefer butterfly clasp as it is more friendly to the strap and won’t damage it as much as the pin buckle will.

The stainless steel casing is highly polished and features slim lugs, which is very suitable for the small, sharp and dressy theme of the watch. There is a layer textured design at the sides of the watch, which will not make it look too boring. On the back is the open caseback (which is where the “Viewmatic” name comes in.

You can “view” the “automatic” movement) where you can see the ETA 2824-2 automatic self-wind movement ticking away. On “flaw” that I can complain is the very low water resistant – only 50 m or 165 feet.

This is quite a low water resistance rating, even for a dress watch. Because of this, don’t try and get the watch close to wet area (rain, sauna, etc) as moisture could get inside it.

Hamilton Jazzmaster Review - Open Caseback

At the back of the Hamilton Jazzmaster is the open caseback to show the ETA 2824-2 automatic movement. This open caseback is what “Viewmatic” means, you can view the movement and be amazed at this mechanical marvel.

Beautiful Guilloche Dial

Apart from the slim casing, the sleekness of this Jazzmaster Viewmatic is contributed by its beautiful guilloche dial. The dial is white in color, with an inner circle of guilloche textured at the center.

The white dial is complemented by the silver hands and markers which make the whole dial design looks fabulous without any contrasting elements.

The hands are sharp slim hands with little bit of lume on top. The markers are combination of index markers and numeral markers at 6,9 and 12 o’clock (or better known as explorer style markers).

I really love how the markers and hands look so sharp with those clean edges. It really gives a modern look to an otherwise simple and clean dial. The font of the numeral markers are also a bit different than other watches too, a detail that I kinda like.

For added functionality, Hamilton added a date display box at the right of the dial. The date display is surrounded by a not so symmetry box frame, which is another design element that I absolutely adored. At the outer edge of the dial are minute markings to help telling time with greater precision.

There are no bezel for this watch, leaving us with lots of dial space for our viewing pleasure =). I really love how simple, clean and sophisticated the dial looks.

The sharp silver stainless steel elements really makes the watch look modern. And not to mention the gorgeous guilloche at the center. A very beautiful watch indeed!

Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic On Hand

ETA 2824-2 Automatic Self-Wind Movement

Inside the Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic is the venerable ETA 2824-2 automatic self wind movement. For those familiar with Swiss made watches, you might have heard about this movement. It is one of ETA’s most popular automatic movement and used in many low to middle range of watches, normally in the Swatch group brands.

The thing is Hamilton and ETA are both subsidiary of Swatch, so it is no surprise here. This movement also is featured in many watches that I’ve reviewed such as Certina DS Podium, VSA Alliance Mechanical and Tissot Le Locle.

This movement uses 25 jewels and has 28800 vibrations per hour, or 8 beats per second. This gives it a smoother sweeping seconds hand action as compared to most low-middle range Japanese watches from Seiko or Citizen.

The movement can be hacked and manual wind. It also has an accuracy of +-15 seconds per day, though most owners report that their watches will run more accurate than that.

A great thing about the 2824-2 movement is how robust it is without much problems to the owners. It comes as no surprise as the movement has been around for about 3 decades and ETA/Swatch don’t have any indication of replacing it. This gives testament to how trustworthy it is.

One thing that I would consider ETA/Swatch to improve is the low power reserve which is about 38 hours. They should really consider giving it at least 50 hours power reserve to keep up with the Japanese. Other than that, this is a great movement that will lasts for a long time.

Above is an unboxing video review of the Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic automatic watch. Notice how sleek and gorgeous it looks on hand!

Hamilton Khaki Field Officer Handwinding H69419363 Review- A Rugged Military Mechanical Watch

Hamilton Khaki Field Officer Handwinding H69419363 Review

Welcome to the post on Hamilton Khaki Field review. True to its military wrist watch root, Hamilton has produced another watch identical to their military watches issued decades ago.

The Hamilton Khaki Field Officer H69419363 is a very rugged military watch by the brand. It’s also have a mechanical movement – meaning it cannot self-wind like automatic watches – which makes it a very rare watch nowadays. Let’s have a closer look at this little timepiece.

Hamilton Khaki Field Officer Handwinding H69419363 Review

Simply Styled Military Wrist Watch

The one thing that you will notice when first laying your eyes on the Khaki Field Officer wrist watch is how simple the design is. The case is simply designed without any complicated curves. The dial/watch face is matte green in color with bold numerals as markers. There are also 24 hours markers in the inner dial.

On the outer edge of the dial we have some triangles next to the markers – apparently these triangles are filled with lume to provide some indication in low light environment. There is a date display at 3 o’clock for added functionality. Signatures on the dial are kept to a minimum with small fonts.

The hands are sword shaped hands that is neither slim nor bulky and filled with lume. The total look of the dial is very simple and not eye-catching at all. There is no reflecting elements at all – the stainless steel case is powder coated while the dial is matte.

The 20 mm strap is also made of canvas (with some leather lining for comfort) instead of leather. This is truly a down-to-earth and humble wrist watch with military styling.

Side by side comparison: Hamilton Khaki Field Officer on the left and Hamilton Khaki King on the right. Both are inspired by Hamilton’s vintage military watches but have diifferent styling concept – the Khaki King is more refined and beautiful while the Khaki Field is simpler

Hamilton Khaki King Vs Khaki Field

The Khaki Field Officer watch is very different than the Khaki King. Hamilton has chosen to make both military watches to cater for different tastes of their customers. For those that like a military watch with a beautiful shining watch face and case, you can choose the Hamilton Khaki King. It’s also has the exclusive look with its brown leather band and contrast stitching.

Meanwhile those that want a no frills military watch can go for the much simpler (and cheaper) Hamilton Khaki Field Officer. This watch is meant for those that love simplicity and just want a watch that can work. It’s also perfect for outdoor activities and sports as the watch is light and the simple look suited those activities well.

Just don’t go for any diving or swimming with it. It got a 50 m water resistance but most watch experts don’t think a water resistance rating like that can actually be used to go deep to 50 m. A splash of water here and there should be fine though.

Quality Swiss Wrist Watch At Low Price

Another thing that I really like about the Hamilton Khaki Field Officer wrist watch is the low price of it (around $260 online) with some quality materials. It can be said to be a full fledged Swiss watch, material wise. It has a stainless steel case with a diameter of 38 mm and just about 9 mm thick.

It is very thin due to its mechanical movement (more about that later) which gives it a very nice slim look just like vintage military watches decades ago. The 38 mm diameter also adds to the exclusivity and will really suit most people’s wrist.

The watch also features a sapphire crystal which is just outstanding for a $260 watch. The sapphire dial window crystal is slightly domed and will provide good protection against any scratch to the watch.

The choice of a canvas strap is actually very suitable to the retro outdoor look of the watch. Some might not really like canvas straps and prefer leather but this is a watch that is meant to be used outdoor, in the jungle somewhere. A leather strap is really out of place in those places =)

You can watch this video to see the Hamilton Khaki Field Officer up close

Mechanical Hand-Winding Movement of ETA 2804-2

The most special and interesting aspect of the Hamilton Khaki Field Officer is the mechanical hand-winding movement. What does it mean? It means the watch is not an automatic watch (you can “recharge” the watch by using it everyday).

Instead you have to hand-wind it manually to keep it running as it don’t have the self-winding mechanism. For more information, you can read my previous post on automatic and mechanical movement here.

The absence of self-winding mechanism made the watch thinner than other watches and give it the very sexy thin body. The reason why I feel that this watch is very special is that there are not much mechanical movement timepieces out there right now. It’s always automatic and quartz only. This gives the Hamilton Khaki Field a unique position in the eyes of watch lovers.

The movement features ETA Cal. 2804-2, which is based on ETA’s most common automatic movement – the Cal. 2824-2 (which is featured in Tissot Le Locle). This movement has 17 jewels and vibrates at 28800 per hour or 8 beats per second. It also has a good 42 hours power reserve. In order to hand-wind it, you just have to rotate the crown (positioned at 3 o’clock) upward to wind the mainspring.

Everyone should be very careful when hand-winding a mechanical watch. The winding must be done when not wearing the watch. The crown has to be turned while being gripped by the fingers at the side. Only rotating action can be applied on the crown – any other actions such as pushing up, down, or sides must not be done because it could damage the internal mechanism.

A huge disadvantage with the ETA 2804-2 mechanical movement is there is no slip spring. So theoretically you can actually break the mainspring by overwinding the watch. Luckily to break it is not an easy feat as you need to have a super strong grip and fingers. The key is to stop winding as soon as a resistance is felt when winding the watch.

Hamilton Khaki Field Officer Advantages And Disadvantages

1- A cheap mechanical watch with great quality by Hamilton
2- Sapphire crystal at this price is simply outstanding
3- A truly simple retro wrist watch – perfect for those who like understated watches and not eye-catching
4- Great for outdoor activities due to its small size and light weight.

1- It is a mechanical hand-winding movement which means the watch has to be hand-wind everyday
2- ETA 2804-2 mechanical hand-wind movement does not have slip spring. There is a possibility of damaging the mainspring or gears inside the watch if you are not careful

Final Thoughts

So who is the watch is for? It is perfect for those looking a simple watch to be used for casual or outdoor activities. You don’t need a beautiful shining watch with leather strap while camping in the jungle right?

This Hamilton is sufficient enough to be used for outdoor activities. It is also light on the wrist. The mechanical movement is considered a step backward for some people but I feel that this adds to the choice of the watches nowadays. Some people (me included) will feel excited to have a mechanical watch, the original form of our watches today.

I hope you guys enjoy this Hamilton Khaki Field review. If you have any other questions about this unique handwinding/mechanical watch, feel free to drop it at the comments section below.

Hamilton Intra Matic H38455131 Automatic Dress Watch – Gorgeous American Classic

Hamilton Intra Matic H38455131 Automatic Dress Watch - Gorgeous American Classic

Hamilton Intra Matic is Hamilton’s classic line of watch, designed by taking the cues of the American brand’s vintage dress watch models. They are really popular in the 1960s for quality watches that rivaled even the Swiss. Just like the Hamilton Khaki King this watch is a homage to their American heritage, specifically their vintage dress watches.

Side by side comparison of the Hamilton Vintage (top pic) and the new Hamilton Intra Matic (bottom pic). Timeless beauty is the word here. The design works in the 1960s, and it still looks gorgeous in this time and age.

Hamilton Intra Matic Specification

Diameter: 38 mm or 42 mm
Thickness: 10 mm
Lug to lug width: 48 mm
Lug width: 20 mm
Weight: 50 grams
Case: Polished stainless steel
Dial: Black dial
Dial Window: Sapphire Crystal with dome shape
Band: 20 mm width multi-link polished stainless steel bracelet with butterfly clasp.
Water Resistance: 50m / 164 ft
Movement: Swiss ETA 2892A2
Movement Features: 21 Jewels, 42 hours power reserve, +-20 seconds maximum daily variation (average of +-5 seconds per day)
Other Features: Crown at 3 o’clock, exhibition caseback, decorated movement, date display at 6 o’clock, Swiss Made
Best Place To Buy: Amazon.com

5 different designs were produced. Each of them is offered in 2 sizes : 38 mm and 42 mm case diameter

Hamilton produced 10 different Intra Matic models (shown above or you can view it all at Hamilton’s website here).

The models are similar, but with different combinations of dial color (black or silver), band type (stainless steel multi-link bracelet or leather band), casing diameter (38 mm or 42 mm) and casing color (polished stainless steel or gold coated stainless steel).

Everything else (dial design, the venerable ETA 2892A2 movement) is the same for all the models. The watch I’m reviewing in this article is the 38 mm diameter, black dial with bracelet version (because this is the one I fancy the most =) and it’s serial number is H38455131.

But as I said earlier, the other watches are basically the same with this one and this review should be able to cover all of them.

Hamilton American Classic Watches – Gorgeous Slim Profile

American Classic is the other name of the Intra Matic line and I explains itself. The watches are designed as a tribute to the vintage Hamilton dress watches. The dial with the stick markers and slim hands are reminiscent of their old watches.

Even the Hamilton signature and logo is the same as their vintage ones. This is a vintage Hamilton watch out the outside, but with modern parts and manufacturing processes to give you the best of both worlds.

The watch is produced in 2 diameter, 38 mm and 42 mm. I would definitely take the 38 mm as my wrist is quite small but for those that have a bigger wrist, you can always get the bigger version, albeit at a higher price than the 38 mm.

The one thing I really like about this watch is the slim profile, at 9.5 mm thick thanks to its slim ETA 2892A2 movement (more on that later).

Coupled with the overall slim case design, and the dome shaped dial window, the watch is very sleek and looks as elegant as what you would want from a dress watch. At just 50 gram, this could be the lightest watch you ever use.

The dial is black in color, and has stick markers. A date display is located at 6 o’clock, a very refreshing and unique design as it is very different than today’s common date at 3 o’clock design.

The Hamilton signature and logo is located at the center top of the watch and featuring Hamilton’s old logo and signature. The dial window is made from sapphire crystal and shaped to be like a dome.

The polished stainless steel case is also designed to be curvy at the edges, creating a round shape all over the watch which is very beautiful to look at.

Hamilton Intra Matic H38455131 Automatic Dress Watch - Gorgeous American Classic

Beautiful Multi-Link Bracelet

The bracelet of the Hamilton Intra Matic is a true art in itself. The bracelet is constructed from multi links instead of the traditional one piece link in many bracelets.

The multi link bracelet’s polished stainless steel create a beautiful and reflective effect, catching lights from different angles. It’s just truly amazing to look at and beautifully complement the handsome watch.

The clasp is butterfly clasp with push button, same as the Tissot PRS 516. Because of this, it would be quite hard to adjust the bracelet perfectly to your hand because of the absence of adjustment slots in the clasp.

But if you are not a bracelet type guy, there is also models of the Hamilton Intra Matic with leather bands that looks as stunning.

Swiss ETA 2892A2 Movement – High Quality Movement In A Middle Range Watch

Inside the Hamilton Intra Matic automatic watch, is the Swiss ETA Caliber 2892A2 movement. If you noticed, the movement is different than other typical Swatch Group low-middle range watches that uses ETA 2824-2 and 2834-2 (day and date) movement family (such as the Tissot Le Locle and Hamilton Khaki King).

The ETA 2892A2 is an improved version of the 2824-2, in which it has a slimmer profile, smaller diameter to be able to fit with lots of watches, newer technology and more accurate.

The result: a higher quality movement that is said to be on par with Rolex’s own movement and typically equipped in higher end brands such as Breitling and IWC.

And that is what makes the Hamilton Intra Matic a true bargain for automatic watch lovers. The 2892A2 in a middle range watch is just unthinkable of.

The slim profile of this movement is what enabled the watch to get its slim profile. One thing that I really don’t like is the absence of seconds hand (you would need some time to notice it from the photos and videos).

Hamilton opted not to put any seconds hand in this watch, which is not a really good decision. For me, a seconds hand is what will give automatic watches its characteristic sweeping motion. Not to mention you cannot set the watch to the exact time if there is no seconds hand.

It is truly a foresight by Hamilton in this part. I really hope they reconsider this and re-release another Intra Matic model with seconds hand =)

Hamilton Intra Matic H38455131 Automatic Dress Watch - Gorgeous American Classic

The watch also has an exhibition caseback – a standard of some sort for dress watches. Through the caseback, you can see the back of the ETA 2892A2 movement.

It has been decorated beautifully. The rotor got Hamilton signature engraved on it, and is very well executed. The watch also is rated to have 50 m or 164 feet water resistance for your peace of mind.

Hamilton Intra Matic is a very beautiful dress watch, with timeless dial design that is just classy and elegance to wear and look at.

The slim profile, dome sapphire crystal dial window and the case’s curvature all make the watch slimmer than it is and looks sleek. Inside the watch is the venerable Swiss ETA 2892A2, ETA’s higher range of movement.

The multi link bracelet is so amazing and really goes well with the watch. This is definitely a catch for a watch below $600.

Hamilton Khaki King review Hands on

A Homage To Hamilton’s Military Watch History

Hamilton watch company was founded in the US around 1900s in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It began by making and selling pocket watches, and later wrist watches to the public. The company was famous for being assigned with producing accurate and durable timepieces for the American army during World War II.

Around the 1980s, the brand was sold to the Swatch Group, and later it was moved entirely to the Swiss. It’s quite sad to know that a once popular American watch manufacturer was sold to another country. But hey, look at the good part. Now all Hamilton’s watches are Swiss Made =)

The Hamilton Khaki King is a homage to their military watches, but with some modern styling twist. Hamilton still preserved the big and very readable hour markers. The watch was made using heavy duty stainless steel, an absolute must for the maximum protection and durability for any military watch.

It’s slightly bigger than it’s older brother, at 40 mm diameter and 11 mm thickness – though that’s actually just the right size with the current trend right now for men’s watches. With the size, it will look balanced on any wrist.

Traditional military watches used Nato straps, but Hamilton opted for a 20 mm leather strap on this watch. A good move I would say as the leather strap with contrast stitching make the watch look much elegant and manly, not to mention very comfortable to wear too.

Hamilton Khaki King hands on

Look at how gorgeous the watch is. The usage of polished finish on some parts of the watch make it less rugged but still a tough watch nonetheless =p

Simple, Rugged and ManlyMilitary Watch Styling

As mentioned earlier, the Hamilton Khaki King took some design cues from it’s older brother. The dial is black, with combination of 12-hour markers at the outer dial and 24-hour markers at the inner dial – classic design of military watches.

There are minute markers around the edge of the dial. Day and date display are at located 12 o’clock, a quite unique position as most watches would put it at 3 o’clock.

But then the day is displayed in full e.g “Saturday” instead of just “Sat” like normal watches as they have more space. It depends on the people really, but I found it quite interesting and like it.

The hands are simple sword style luminous hands. The dial window is anti-reflective sapphire crystal, normal for watches at this price range. It’s scratch resistant and a must for a durable military watch.

The watch also has an sapphire crystal exhibition caseback, where we can see its ETA 2834-2 movement. The movement has been engraved with the Hamilton signature and shows some of the 25 jewels it has.

Check out this awesome review of the Hamilton Khaki King

Hamilton Khaki King (H64455533)Hamilton Khaki King (H64455533)

On the dial, we can see the signatures “Hamilton”, “Khaki” and “Automatic” on it. The crown is positioned at 3 o’clock, with crown guards.

There is an H emblem on it signifying Hamilton. The bezel is not decorated, and fixed in its position.

The finish of the casing is a combination of polished and brushed surfaces that makes it looks totally gorgeous and yet still look as a military watch.

Overall, the watch is very rugged and tough looking watch. I certainly love its manly feeling. It’s made of high quality material and craftsmanship.

Some people would say the watch can be wore with dress shirts, but I beg to differ. It’s a handsome watch for sure, but it’s just too rugged to be used with a dress shirt. For me, this watch fits perfectly when I’m going out in my casual wear, jeans and all.

Hamilton Khaki King Automatic Watch H64455533 Review - A Homage To Military Watch

The back of the watch is an open caseback so that its lucky owner can see the ETA 2834-2 movement. Open caseback has always been a favorite watch element to me. There is something satisfying to see the wheel balance oscillates in swift manner as if the watch itself is alive =)

Swiss ETA 2834-2 Movement

Underneath the brushed stainless steel casing of the watch, there is a Swiss ETA Caliber 2834-2 automatic movement, a powerhouse and commonly used in many watches under the Swatch Group brand. The movement has 25 jewels with some of them can be seen from the exhibition caseback.

The rotor has also been engraved with Hamilton’s signature and can be seen from the case back. This movement is accurate up to +-15 seconds per day, though most watch owners out there report that it has a much higher accuracy, only +-5 seconds per day. The movement has 38 hours power reserve, pretty standard for automatic watches.

The watch is water resistant up to 50 m or 165 feet. This means that it is not suitable for diving, snorkeling or swimming. Though some splash of water here and there would be fine.
